I am running for the Carroll County Board of Education because I can make a difference. Education plays a key role in our children’s development as happy, successful individuals. I am a mother of two school-aged children and a professional educator; my experience with public education and our schools is born out of both aspects. This dual view affords me a greater understanding of the challenges that face our schools and our children and helps me to clearly discern future paths towards success on both fronts. I have a lifetime commitment to public education, and I want to help Carroll County schools function at the top of their potential. I want to be there to support the families and teachers of Carroll County.

My parents instilled the value of education in me at a young age—a belief that guides how my husband I raise our own children. I was born and raised in the small Pennsylvania town of Connellsville with my father, a newspaper editor, my mother, a registered nurse, and my sister. I earned a B.S. in Elementary and Kindergarten Education from The Pennsylvania State University and an M.Ed. in School Supervision and Administration from Bowie State University. Throughout my college years, I served as a tutor to children in grades K-12, and spent my summers working at camps for children of all ages.

I live in Mount Airy, Maryland, and take pride in my town and county communities. A strong community starts with neighbors who pitch in to preserve and improve an everyday way of life for all citizens. Towards this idea, I serve on the Mount Airy Schools Task Force, Parr’s Ridge Elementary PTA (I co-chair Teacher Appreciation Week), the Carroll County Public Schools Curriculum Council, Parents at Home (PATH), and the Suburban Maryland Alumni Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi. My family and I are members of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Poplar Springs.

My experience in the public school system is encompassing. Fifteen years ago, I got my start in the field of education. For 6 years, I was a public school classroom teacher, dedicated to my elementary school students. I also enjoyed the challenge of working in the central office of a school system, and as consultant to the Director of Elementary Education and the Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for a school system. I taught a pre-school class full of eager-to-learn students when my own children were small. For the last several years, I have written classroom materials for companies like Discovery Communications, Inc., and this fall, I ventured back into the classroom as a reading support teacher in a neighboring public school system. My multi-perspective experience in public education enables me to understand and consider all levels of public school needs—from the classroom to the boardroom.
